Build the Path Before You Get the Traffic

When you’re new to affiliate marketing, it’s easy to believe that more traffic is the answer to everything.
You might think, “If I could just get 500 people to click my link, surely I’d start making sales.”
But here’s a question worth asking:
What happens after those 500 people click?
If you’re sending everyone directly to an affiliate offer and hoping they’ll immediately buy, you’re leaving a lot to chance.
That’s why I believe beginners should build the path before getting the traffic.
Your path doesn’t need to be complicated. In fact, I think simple is better when you’re starting.
Think about your customer journey like this:
VISITOR → LEAD → RELATIONSHIP → OFFER
A visitor discovers your content and clicks.
Instead of immediately asking that person to buy something, you give them a reason to join your email list.
Now they’re a lead.
From there, you can follow up, provide helpful information, answer questions, and begin building a relationship.
Eventually, when you recommend an offer that fits their needs, you’re no longer just another stranger dropping an affiliate link in front of them.
You’ve built a connection.
That’s why my approach is:
Think List First → Build the Path → Then Get the Traffic.
What to Do Next
Before spending money on traffic or worrying about getting thousands of visitors, grab a piece of paper and answer these four questions:
1. Where will people discover me?
Facebook? Your blog? YouTube? Search? Paid traffic?
2. Where will I send them?
Ideally, create a simple page where interested visitors can join your email list.
3. Why should they subscribe?
Give them something useful—a checklist, guide, video, training, or another helpful resource.
4. What happens after they subscribe?
Plan several emails that welcome them, help them, build trust, and eventually introduce a relevant offer.
That’s your starting path.
Don’t worry if it isn’t perfect. You can improve it as you learn.
The important thing is knowing where you’re sending people and what happens next.
So before asking, “How do I get more traffic?” ask yourself:
“Have I built somewhere worth sending that traffic?”
Build that first.
Then start bringing people to it.
Think List First. Build the Path. Then get the traffic.
